2011 Circle on the Court Recap

Our Pacific Northwest Diabetes Week kicked off on Sunday, November 13 with Circle on the Court; an extremely effective community awareness event at the Rose Garden Arena in Portland, Oregon. At Circle on the Court, attendees were thrilled to recieve free health screenings, eye screenings, healthy cooking classes, one-on-one counseling with diabetes educators, and much more. Free sports clinics for kids were held by NBA and Portland Timbers Ambassadors, including Chris Dudley and Dominique Wilkins.

Sports Clinics for Kids

Over 200 families participated in two sessions of basketball and soccer clinics coached by Portland Trail Blazer and Portland Timbers ambassadors. Kids of all ages learned basketball and soccer skills right on the Rose Garden court, and also took home valuable lessons about the importance of staying active. The atmosphere was fun-filled with music from the Rose Garden sound system and kids seeing themselves up on the jumbotron!


Healthy Cooking Demonstrations

Throughout the day, chefs at the Regence Healthy Cooking stage demonstrated cooking techniques for nutritious, delicious meals and answered questions from the audience. Free samples were enjoyed by all, inspiring participants in their own healthy cooking endeavors!

The Regence team was available to talk one-on-one with attendees about nutrition and health, and shared the recipes for the food they prepared:

  • Easy Cheesy Macaroni
  • Indian Spiced Fish
  • Caramelized Lemon Chicken with Broccoli & Spinach
  • Chicken Strips

  PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center demonstrated healthy cooking techniques featuring gluten free recipes.

Del Monte Fresh was a big hit, with banana-costumed volunteers handing out fresh pineapple samples to promote a healthy diet.


Free Haircuts -

Regence Healthy Edge & Free Fades Exhibit


Experts from Champions Barber Shop had attendees looking sharp with a haircut - and they got a blood pressure check at the same time!


Celebrities & Coaches

Attendees met celebrities Chris Dudley, Dominique Wilkins, Darnell Valentine, Timber Joey, the Blazer Dancers, Coach Bobby Medina, and Rod Hill from KGW News Channel 8. A special highlight was the autograph session where attendees were able to get sports cards and apparel signed by the celebrities.

In the sports clinics, Chris and Dominique shared their personal stories, and answered questions about living active with diabetes.

Many other celebrities lent their presence and support for increasing education and awareness about diabetes in our community.



Free Health Screenings & Counseling

Over 300 attendees received free health screenings provided by Abbott Laboratories, Diabetomics, Casey Eye Institute, Adventist Health, and health counseling from OHSU Certified Diabetes Educators.

Fitness Demonstrations

Fitness Together held interactive fitness demos throughout the day, engaging and encouraging participants to stay active. People were up and moving with fun, simple fitness techniques.


Live Music

Attendees enjoyed live music from Ben Rue, X-Factor contestant and from New Invasion, a talented up and coming local band.


Community Resources

Over 70 vendors were at Circle on the Court to showcase our community resources - organizations committed to helping others lead healthy, active lives! They shared their expertise, educational materials, encouragement, and much more.

Fort Vancouver Medical Magnets demonstrated basic first aid on teddy bears - an activity much loved by young and old alike!


Circle on the Court

In conclusion of the day's events, attendees, celebrities, vendors, and VIPs all gathered on the Rose Garden Arena Court to form a human blue circle in recognition of World Diabetes Day 11.14.11.


The Joslin Award

Jack V. Fox, age 70, received the Joslin Award for living with diabetes for 59 years.


Flash Mob

Portland joined cities around the world in recognizing World Diabetes Day with a flash mob dance to Michael Jackson's "Beat It!".
